Sousaphone Ages: 15-26 (or with permission of instructor) Ability level: Advanced - Young Professional
Description: Students will be putting together a set of tunes that is ready to perform in only 3 days. Ability to
learn tunes quickly is a must. Current or former PYJO 1a, 1b, 2a students are all welcome.
Jazz Improv Boot Camp Class TUESDAYS June 18-August 20
Rehearsals: 4:30-6:00pm Tuesdays: June 18-August 20 • Registration Form
Instruments: Any Ages: All Ability level: Intermediate/Advanced/Professional
Description: Students may sign-up for one class or be part of the band weekly. The class studies 1-2 Jazz standard tunes each week; working on the melody, chord changes, solo techniques, listening skills, rhythmic concepts, patterns in 12 keys, and the roles of each member of the Jazz combo. Current or former PYJO 1a, 1b, 2a,2b students are all welcome.
Composition/Music Theory & Coffee TUESDAYS June 18-Aug 27
Classes: 10am-11:30am Tuesdays: June 18-August 27 • Registration Form
Instruments: Any Ages: 15+ Ability level: Advanced - Professional
Description: This early-bird class offers serious music students a series of theory and composition lessons focusing on challenging harmonies, building melodies, chord voicings, and orchestration. Class size is limited to six students.
Trombone Workshop June 24-26 • Registration Form
Rehearsals: 6-9pm June 24-25 & 12-2:30pm June 26 (at PSU)
Performance: 7pm Wednesday, June 26 (Portland State University, Lincoln Hall rm 75)
Instruments: Trombone or Bass Trombone
Ages: All Ability level: Intermediate/Advanced/Professional. (2+ years experience on the trombone).
Description: This is a trombone masterclass with a performance in a large trombone ensemble. In addition to preparing large ensemble pieces, students will learn trombone-specific techniques for practicing, warming-up, and approaching all styles of music.
PYJO Big Band Jazz Workshop July 8-12 • Registration Form
Rehearsals: Band 2 Intermediate - Advanced 4:15-6:15pm July 8-11
Band 1 Advanced - Young Professional 7:00-9:00pm July 8-11

(Clarinet, Flute, and other instruments considered in band 2)
